Students will learn in a comfortable and clean grooming environment with individual grooming stations.  Our instruction teaches the “art” of pet grooming, a personal one-on-one for the student and client.  We teach Grooming 101, Body Painting, Designer Nail Coloring, we do it all!

I am a professional groomer and business owner for 52 years.  This program will teach you how to deal with clients and provide you with skills that will give you the ability to put out quality hand groomed animals that you can be very proud of.

Emphasis is placed on the quality of work as well as quantity of work so that you will be able to enter into the workforce with the ability to deal with customers and be familiar with shop operations.  At completion of this course, you will be able to walk out our door fully prepared and ready for the world of grooming.  DREAM OUT LOUD!

 

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

 

Enrollment Requirements

Student must read, write and speak English.  All students must provide proof that they are at least 17 years of age. Students must be of good health and be current with their Tetnus vaccinations (either proof or waiver must be signed.)  They must be able to stand for 8 hours and be able to lift animals 50 lbs. or larger into the bathing tub. Students should have an interest in the safety of animals.  Students must provide deposit fee for application and tuition for Classes.  Students must also have all required grooming equipment at the start of class.  If required grooming equipment is not present within 2 weeks of the start of class, the student will be suspended until equipment is present, but will not start until the first available class opening.

 

Student Orientation

The first day of class, all students must attend orientation to review the rules and expectations of the school.  Student must supply his or her own grooming jacket; wear casual clothes and comfortable shoes.  During orientation you will:

 

A.    Shop Tour

B.    Care of shop equipment

C.   Dress code  

D.   Shop rules; time, absences, behavior

E.    Animal handling

 

Start Date

The School will begin instruction of the student on an agreed upon day of the month in which the student has already paid the total tuition and fees specified in this catalog.

 

Ending Date

Students will complete the program approximately 16-20 weeks after their start date assuming no absences or other extenuating circumstances have occurred.  The class should not last longer than 5 months.

 

Tuition Charges:

Total Course fee is $2,800.00.  $600.00 deposit  (MUST BE MONEY ORDER OR CASH) is to reserve the class space and start date.  Balance of $2,200.00 is due before your class begins.  $600.00 deposit is non refundable.

 

Cancellation Policy

A full refund will be made to any Student who cancels the enrollment contract within 72 hours (until midnight of the third day excluding Saturday, Sunday, and legal holidays) after the enrollment contract is signed and a tour of the facilities and equipment is made by the perspective Student.

 

Refund Policy:

The $600 is for reserving and holding your start date in class.  This $600 is non-refundable.

 

The $2,200 class fee is only refundable as described below:

Withdrawal Policy: 

Withdrawal by student must be done in writing and presented to Director-Janet M. Rook.

 

Non-completion: 

Any student whom is enrolled in this course shall not be employed as a groomer or provide grooming services for any sort of compensation, until a certificate of completion is obtained from this course.

If a student does not receive a certificate of completion from this course, the student agrees that student WILL NOT seek employment as a groomer, directly or indirectly; or operate, own or participate in the grooming business anywhere within a 100 (one hundred) mile radius of Springfield, Missouri for a period of One Year from the time that the student drops out of the course.

Students MAY NOT, AT ANYTIME, communicate, convey or divulge any information pertaining to the accounts or customers of Jan’s Grooming to individuals, companies or persons whom are in the grooming businesses, or whom are competitors of Jan’s Grooming.  Students shall not solicit clients of Jan’s Grooming at anytime during or after being a student at Jan’s Grooming School.

 

Grades: 

Each Student will perform these tasks:

A.  Phone handling, schedules, information and filling out Pet cards.

B.  Grooming ability; bathing, clipping, animal handling,  and finishing on both cats and dogs, are including a  Toy Breed, A Terrier Breed and a Non Sporting Breed.

C.  Shop Upkeep including cleaning stations, tub, drying   room, and grooming room.

D.  Written Test at the end of the course

 

Oral evaluations and counseling sessions will be on an as needed basis. 

 

Attendance:

Each individual attends class Tuesday through Friday.  Unless otherwise scheduled. School hours are from 7am to 3pm, totaling 400 clock hours.  You are allowed ½ hour for lunch break.  Lunch is not a scheduled time.  If you are grooming a dog, you need to finish that dog before you take your lunch break.  Lunch will be given between 11am and 1 pm.  Time cards must be filled out and turned in weekly.  During the last 100 of the 400 required hours of class, students will work as shop table renters (60% rent, 40% student), assuming students have mastered each breed and is competent and knowledgeable to work on their own.

 

Absences:

If a Student is unable to attend class they must call before 8am.  Excessive absences (2 no call, no shows) will result in termination.  More than 6 absences will also result in termination.  (Dr. Excuses are required for illnesses).

 

Tardiness

Unacceptable.

 

Graduation:

Each Student is issued a Diploma upon successful completion of course which states number of hours and that school requirements that have been met.     

 

Our training is individualized and hands on training on for each and every breed stated in this flyer.   

 

We encourage all Graduates to refer to the school for information and support.

 

DOG GROOMING PROGRAM

 

Grooming Equipment:

Develop a routine to care for grooming tools properly for the most efficient and longgevity.  Define and identify blades and prioritize their uses.  Learn the proper handling and care of clippers and to be able to identify symptoms of problems and know how to repair your clippers and extend their life and efficiently.  Recognize uses for brushes, combs, rake and mat splitter.  

This course teaches the student to identify different shampoos, dips, rinses, oils and reason and use of each product.  Describe mixing products and understand the concerns and implications of improper use.  

Bathing: 

This course describes roughing and preliminary preparation before bathing.  Introduction to proper bathing and drying expressing anal glands, recognizing worms and correct application of flea and tick dips.  Roughing of dogs will include shaving of pads and sanitary area, clipping nails and use of quick stop. Correct brushing techniques to avoid brush burns.  Dematting of animals in a humane matter to 
prevent painful memories of the visit to the groomer.  Recognize different ways of drying dogs, i.e. fluff drying, blow drying and cage drying.  Correct techniques for cleaning the ears and use of ear powder and forceps, recognizing ear problems, such as ear-mites will be detailed.  Students will be taught to recognize skin sroblems caused by fleas, ticks and fungus, as well as, abnormal skin conditions, i.e. eczema.

The student will learn how to interpret a client's grooming instructions and how and when to suggest the appropriate type of groom for their breed of dog. You will also learn reasons why you would inform a client their dog is too matted to be brushed out and must be stripped.  Show courtesy to customer and demonstrate the proper way to brush their pet to keep it in excellent condition.  Distinguish when you have a right to refuse to groom a dog.

Pet Psychology

Learn how to create a safe environment and positive relationship between you and the animal you are grooming.  When to muzzle, table, etc.  Tone of voice and how to give commands.  You will learn how to introduce a new puppy to grooming.  We will explain how you would determine if it would be unsafe for you or the animal to continue grooming.  Why owners must always be told when an 
inadvertent accident happens while grooming their pet.  How to tell an owner, tactfully, that their pet was injured while being groomed.

Breed Recognition

You will be introduced to the different breeds listed under the Toy, Sporting, Terrior, Working, Herding, Non Sporting and Hound Groups in your AKC Dog Book.

This course will cover the grooming patterns on the Cocker Spaniel and why some pet Cockers are groomed differently than others.  You will learn how to groom a Shih Tzu, Miniature Schnauzer, and the many different poodle cuts.  Demonstration of correct patterns to be used on the different Terrier breeds.  Correct brushing and proper scissor pattern for the Bischon Frise will also be demonstrated.
Demonstration of ways to groom the mixed breed and perfecting scissoring skills by hands on scissoring.  Students will be aware of the requirements for Certification and what study materials will help them for the test.


Client Relations

You will be taught how to keep correct records and proper telephane techniques.

 

Final Test: 

Each student will perform 4 or more of the following clips.

A. Mixed Breed
B. Shitz- puppy clip
C. Poodle
D. Scottie or Schnauzer
E. Bishon
F. Shitz - Malteze - Yorkie - Top Knots
G. Cat - longhair - shave down

There will also be a written final examination that will include all the information covered throughout the course.

Grooming School Equipment Needed

 

The following items will be needed at the start of school.  Failure to have these items within the first two weeks of school will result in suspension.  Students will not be allowed to return to school until items are obtained and the next school opening is available.
